When Junior breaks the news that he is moving to Reardan to Rowdy he takes it in the worst way possible and doesn't talk to Arnold still doesn't. But throughout the book Arnold keeps trying to make things better with Rowdy. He tries emailing him but Rowdy either barely says anything or doesn't say anything at all. When Reardon plays Wellipoint in the first game of the season Arnold is booed when he enters the court. When he checks into the game somebody throws a quarter at him and he has to get stitches. At this point Arnold is feeling really mad and sad. He feels mad because he can’t play because somebody threw a quarter at him. He is sad because he doesn't feel welcome because everybody is screaming at him. Although he is feeling these emotions he has enough perseverance to return back to the game. A couple of minutes in Rowdy elbows him and he is unconscious. This is yet another example of how Rowdy is blocking Junior out. When he is better he returns to action and the Reardon team goes on a 12 game winning streak. Then there is the one of the biggest games of the season if not the biggest. Rematch between Reardon and Wellpoint. After a hard match Reardon pulls out the victory and Arnold holds Rowdy to only scoring 4 points. After the game Junior feels ashamed because he knows what those kids on the rez are going through. So he tries yet again to email Rowdy saying that he is sorry for beating there team. Rowby responds with a mean comment and Arnold follows with a mean comment in the end Rowdy says “haha” I personally think that Rowdy is slowly but surely letting Arnold back into his life. I think that Rowdy couldn’t survive without Junior for the rest of his life.

ReplyDeleteI think that yes, Rowdy and Junior will become friends again because of their newborn mutual love for basketball. They both love to play and, "played one-on-one for hours". Although, it is quite hard to tell whether Rowdy will accept Junior or not because they both laugh when vulnerable or in bad situations. The death of Mary seemed to have gotten to Rowdy and he saw that Junior is going through a rough patch and needs empathy and support. The kids at Reardan are very nice and all, but Rowdy is Junior's good old Indian best friend who can empathize. The competitiveness from both of them also drives their friendship. Rowdy seems to be happy that Arnold is self-reliant and that will build their friendship. The point is that Junior left Wellpinit as a reliant on other people wimp but came back as a great athlete and, as Rowdy would say, “nomad” who is self-reliant.
If I were Rowdy I would not be happy with Arnold but proud. When Arnold went to the rez he did not have as much courage as he does now. He actually wanted to win a basketball game against Rowdy and he wanted to represent Reardon. I think that when Rowdy gets beaten by Arnold he should be proud because when Arnold left for Reardon he wasn't just looking to get out of the rez but he was trying to find hope. Now at Reardon he is actually confident in his life and he is not depressed. I think Rowdy should realize how much good Reardon has given to Arnold and that he left for something bigger than what Rowdy thought.

I think that although Rowdy is upset that Junior won, he might also respect him more because he used to be better than Junior, and now Junior beat him. It will definitely take more time for Rowdy and Junior to become friends again, but I think that eventually, they will. Rowdy might realize why Junior left and understand that it’s okay, because he left to get a better life, and Rowdy wants that, too. When Rowdy says “haha,” he is trying to intimidate Junior, and make him feel bad for leaving. Also, I think that Rowdy is almost 100% confident that he will win against Junior, and so he thinks that this is all sort of funny, because he could beat Junior easily.
