Why does Junior say he would always love his tribe? What do you think this reveals about Junior? Thomas Fulginiti

Junior said that he will always love his “tribe” because even though the majority of the time
when he is around his peers he is hated and bullied, but now they stood up and showed sympathy for him. Throughout the novel gruesome events have occurred from pretty much every
individual he has met. The only person that all the time was supporting Arnold was his
Grandmother. When she passed away the “tribe” felt his sadness and responded in an
exceptional manner. “We were stunned because almost two thousand Indians showed up to
say goodbye. And nobody gave me crap (159).” Also the page 175 shows how all of his
classmates are no longer going to let him be oppressed and made fun of by students and
teachers. Both communities, Wellpoint and Rearden, are starting to put herself in his shoes
and understanding what he has gone through his entire life, especially now. This reveals to
Arnold that there will always be love and support for him and he will always love everyone
else no matter what.

Before now why was Arthur chosen to be disliked? Why?

Did Author betray his tribe or does he still love it?

If you were Arnold and you were told to choose to go either Rearden or Wellpoint (not thinking about
location and wealth) which would you choose?

  1. Personally, I would choose to go to Reardan because as a person I strive for more than is expected from others. Also, I think it would be a great chance if I were to be Arnold to change the family history of coming from poor people. Instead when future generations talk about generations before they would know that one family member put them right on track in order to not have the same story of poor people coming from even poorer people. Plus, being a person who's been bullied before I've faced a lot of adversity throughout the years of my life so far so it would not really get to me as much compared tot other people. I think even my parents would want me to go to Reardan because despite what other say you still have to "dream to get big"(136).

    1. I agree with jude i would go to rearden because he is having a really good moment at Rearden. At the rez he was bullied non stop and rowdy was his only friend. As junior goes on in rearden he will definitely have some bad times but those will result in good not bad.

  2. I think that Junior was disliked by both the people at the reservation, and also the people at Reardan at first, but after a series of very difficult events, he was accepted more, and treated like an outsider less. In Spokane, Junior was disliked because he was thought of as a traitor since he went to school at Reardan. This is evident on page 143 where is says “The rez basketball fans were chanting, ‘Ar-nold sucks! Ar-nold sucks! Ar-nold sucks!’ They weren’t calling me by my rez name, Junior. Nope, they were calling me by my Reardan name.” This shows that the people who live on the reservation treated Junior poorly, and even made sure that it was clear to the kids at Reardan who they were talking about. However, after the tragedy of Grandmother-Spirit’s death, that tormenting seemed to die down. It seems as if it took a horrific event for his tribe members to stop hurting him (both emotionally and physically). As it says on page 160 “People had either ignored me or called me names or pushed me. But they stopped after my grandmother died.” This shows that in a way they (the Spokanes) are pitying Junior and trying to lessen the amount of pain he has to endure. Meanwhile, at Reardan, Junior was first disliked because he was different, and ‘weird’, and out of the Reardan norm. As it says back on page 56 “Those white kids couldn’t believe their eyes. They stared at me like I was Bigfoot or a UFO.” This depicts that at first Junior was thought of as less than everyone else but after he punched Roger and impressed him, and after he became friends with Penelope, the kids at Reardan started to actually like him. Due to all of this information, I think that although Junior has been disliked various times because of various reasons, someway or another, he has managed to gain the respect, or at least the empathy of those people who were disrespecting him. Do you think that Gordy will ever be able to take the place of Rowdy in Junior’s life?

Even before Arnold left the rez he was disliked. Everybody picked on him because he was an easy target. Then, when he chose to leave the rez then there was a whole other level of hatred for him. Yeh he was disliked because he left the rez school system and everybody hates him for that. But in my opinion another reason Arnold is hated is because everybody on the rez thought that Arnold thought he was better than everybody else by leaving. Now, nobody liked the thought of that because on the rez there's always a strive to be the best. Everybody wants to win and be the best. In a way Arnold has won. He got to leave the rez school system and get a better education. On the rez everybody is frustrated because they not only feel betrayed but they feel as if they have lo

  4. I think that Arnold still loves his tribe after all the things that they have done to him because he had so much before he left and now that those things were taken away from him (his grandmother and Eugene), people are starting to understand him. Also, he says at one point that if only a few things hadn’t taken place in Wellpinit, Arnold would have stayed instead of going to Rearden. If I were to choose between going to Rearden and Wellpinit, then I would choose Rearden because it would give me a better chance to pursue my dreams since I have a better education. Also, at Wellpinit I would be an outcast because I would be one of the only white kids there. How do you think that Wellpinit can accept a white kid going to their school (opposite of what he did)?
